A free printable for anyone collecting Social Security before full retirement age
Claimed Social Security early and still working? A $40,000 job means $7,760 of benefits withheld in 2026.Here is the line, and what crossing it costs.
If you are under full retirement age all year, Social Security withholds $1 of benefits for every $2 you earn over $24,480. That is $2,760 at $30,000 of wages, $7,760 at $40,000, $17,760 at $60,000, and a $2,000-a-month benefit is withheld entirely at $72,480. Only wages and self-employment count, IRA withdrawals and pensions do not, and withheld months are added back when you reach full retirement age. The printable has the full table, the year-you-reach-FRA rule, the first-year monthly rule, and the part nobody at the Social Security office mentions: the job also makes up to 85% of your benefit taxable. Quick answers
How much can I earn in 2026 while collecting Social Security?
If you are under full retirement age for the whole year, $24,480. Above that, Social Security withholds $1 of benefits for every $2 of earnings over the line. In the calendar year you reach full retirement age the limit is $65,160 for the months before your birthday month, at $1 for every $3 over. From your full-retirement-age month on there is no limit.
What income counts toward the Social Security earnings limit?
Wages from a job and net earnings from self-employment. Pensions, annuities, IRA and 401(k) withdrawals, interest, dividends, capital gains and rental income do not count, and your spouse's earnings do not count against your benefit.
Are withheld Social Security benefits lost forever?
No. When you reach full retirement age, Social Security recomputes your benefit as if you had claimed later, one month later for every month a full check was withheld, so the higher check continues for life. What you do not get back is the early-claiming reduction on the months that were actually paid. The tax side is separate: the wages can make up to 85% of the benefits you did receive taxable.
